Just in case…

Just in case there are actually any people who listen to the podcasts I occasionally put up here (I know from the stats there are a few) – there won’t be any more posted.

The podcasting idea was something I had looked into deeply, toyed with, and helped Kevin a little bit with in his setup. To that end, I will leave the audio market to him alone.

I enjoy making podcasts and spouting-off audibly, but I’m more of a writing guy. Kevin does a great job speaking and anchoring a show. I cannot pull it off myself at this point, so I think it best to drop it from my agenda.

So, all that out of the way, I do plan on participating in Big Kev’s View as a regular. While I’m not anchor material, I like to think that I add a bit of substance to the show.

Just for archiving purposes, I will keep the podcast posts active for maybe a week from now on here. After that, they will not work as I will de-activate the PodPress plugin.

So please go subscribe to the feed over at Kev’s View, and/or subscribe via iTunes. The feeds for both are right on the front page of his site. Thank you all for your support.

Movies – To see or not to see

Last week I went to see the Dark Knight movie at a midnight showing. (horrible experience at Kerasotes that they vaguely apologized for) This week sees the new Will Ferrell movie, Hellboy, and X-Files waiting to tap my entertainment budget.

I have to say that I’m not in favor of any except Hellboy 2. Yes, Will’s movie will be entertaining and the X-Files is interesting from a nostalgic point. Other than those reasons I don’t see any need to go fork over my dollars to a facility that screwed up the Dark Knight premiere.

H2 looks to have campy humor, big villains, and the main character is a total smart-ass. Sounds like some solid entertainment. Will always puts out funny material (okay, except Kicking and Screaming), but there is nothing there to warrant the expense of seeing it on the big screen. X-Files sounds nice if you want to remember the 90’s, but it hasn’t shown me anything worth more than a rental at the video store.

Emily wants to go retro and see X-Files, so maybe I’ll get drug to that. Otherwise, is there really anything worth going to see? Not in my opinion.

Guitar Hero this Saturday at the Granada

Just a little reminder that the Jaycees will be hosting a Guitar Hero tournament Saturday, July 26th, 2008 at the Granada Center in Mount Vernon, Illinois.

Last time (our first attempt), we had over 70 participants at final count and many observers. We are limiting the tournament to 128 contestants across the 4 categories (Easy, Medium, Hard, and Expert)

If you like rock music, the Granada, or Guitar Hero you should come out and see the fun. Heck, maybe you’ll even decide that you need to participate!

Come out and have a good time while supporting your community.

Wall-E Review

Pixar generally turns out good movies. Some have even been stellar, such as Toy Story. When I went to see Wall-E, I was afraid that they would again put out a good movie, but nothing truly imaginative and spectacular.

I was wrong.

Wall-E is absolutely the best thing to be put out from Pixar since the original Toy Story. I won’t spoil it by giving details. The main character, Wall-E, draws you into his world within the first 10 minutes, and takes you on a roller coaster adventure from there on out. The truly amazing fact about this, is that all of the drama and character interaction is done with almost no dialogue.

There is love, rejection, deception, betrayal, and even a social commentary on how lazy and wasteful we are as a country and world. This movie is absolutely one to see on the big screen. Don’t wait for it to come to DVD, even if you don’t have kids you will have a great time.

Free/Inexpensive Kids Activities at the Salute to Freedom

The Convention and Tourism Bureau will be putting on a spectacular fireworks display again this year at Mount Vernon Outland Airport on July 4th. Last year, the Mount Vernon Jaycees brought out games, prizes, and face painting to provide entertainment for the kids before the fireworks began. Unfortunately, it rained until just before dark. Still, many kids came through and had a great time.

This year, the Jaycees have decided to bring out 3 giant inflatable play-sets for the kids to have fun with and bring back face painting. There will also be a raffle of two (2) $50 gas cards. The raffle will be $1/chance, and face painting will also hold a minimal cost to cover paint (probably $1/cheek).

The spectacular news is that there will be absolutely no cost for children to play on/in the inflatable playsets. Yes, you read correctly – FREE.

“We felt as a community organization that we wanted all children to come out and have fun, without causing an expense to parents. Also, the gas cards could make a parent or visitor very happy.” – Greg Mehochko, 2008 Kids’ Alley chairman

As a community organization, the Jaycees feel it is important to provide entertainment at this family event for those who arrive early. Everyone knows sometimes children get antsy while waiting, and this should be fun for them to enjoy while waiting for dusk.

The Jaycees would like to thank the Convention and Tourism Bureau for allowing us to present Kids’ Alley again this year and for their continued support of our endeavors.
