Why the obsession?

I wonder almost daily what Emily’s obsession with ‘Mythbusters’, ‘Deadliest Catch’, and Discovery Channel has sprung from. I am the first to admit that today’s crop of mainstream television shows suck, but damn I get tired of the various marathons that DC seems to have every week.

For example, New Year’s Day she took over the television and devoted her afternoon to watching and re-watching Mythbusters episodes. No watching anything else, just the re-runs.

Occasionally the Mythbusters have some good tales to test, and Deadliest Catch isn’t bad in small doses, but she insists on watching them every time they are on. How can a person re-watch the same testing and dramatic fish-catching over, and over, and over, and over…?

Mostly this post is asking if anyone has any insight into this behavior. Do you know others who have this type of obsession? Do you?

I’m really wondering what is going on with the obsession.

And so it begins

Another new year has begun.  The kids had a wild night of pizza and soda and watching the ball drop in New York. Simone was here, and all 3 of them had a blast partying it up and acting completely foolish. Between the three of them, they used every plate and glass we had in the house for some reason. It still amazes me how they can need a new glass every time they have a drink, but somehow they do.

Emily was in charge of the circus until I got home from work at 10:30. From there I managed the menagerie up until the ball dropped and the kids got to break out their ‘sparkling apple cider’. They even did a ‘toast’ to the new year. It was pretty cute to watch, I have to say.

Emily slept in until 1 this afternoon. She has to work tonight, as do I, and I’m not sure how much sleep she’ll get tomorrow since I will be working at Ecodigital. Better to get some extra today than do without. When mom’s tired and poopy, everyone suffers. 🙂

Personally, I’m looking forward to finishing my final semester and finally having a degree as an IT Dork. The degree is technically IT Specialist, but it covers so much area that I wish it was more descriptive. Hopefully I will finish my degree with a pay increase and/or a change in employment status. Part-time isn’t paying the bills, hence 2.5 jobs on top of home and school. Yeah, that’s me whining a bit.

For those of you reading my junk, I hope the new year has found you well and leaves you better. For friends and family, I wish nothing but the best for you as well. (Oh, and if you win the lottery, don’t forget me. I won’t forget you.)

Another Christmas has come and gone

I love the holidays. More specifically I love seeing friends and family that I haven’t seen in far too long. I miss seeing my grandfather and my aunts and uncles.

When I was a kid we would all get together almost every weekend. Sometimes for dinner and games. Sometimes just to chit chat for a bit and then go home. As a kid, I had a great time, but I don’t think that I appreciated it nearly as much as I do now looking back.

Friends are another bad spot. Not only do Em and I have to make time to see everyone, but they also have to be free as well in order for us to all see each other. That generally doesn’t actually happen.

Perhaps soon things will change to allow us more freedom and less stress in our lives. This could of course filter into having more time for meaningful time spent with family and friends instead of working 14 hour days.

There are a few things I am working on behind the scenes, but we will just see if they pan out.

Here we go againnnnnn

School has started the fall semester. Strangely enough this fall will see our whole household going to class. Em is doing dental school, I’m in the 3rd semester of my IT Specialist, and the kids are in grade school.

Needless to say, we are running around like crazy people. Erich’s birthday is soon, Emily is getting the shots for her clinicals, I’m running 14 hour Monday’s, Erich has football, there are various Jaycee projects, and then homework for everyone. Wow, that was hard to summarize. I can’t imagine having to say it all.

I have come to the realization that 14 hour Monday’s are going to wipe me out. Wednesdays aren’t bad with 7 hours, I can recover from those. I have to go straight to bed Monday night though. I’m paying for not realizing that sooner today.

Some good news: Emily is wallpapering Erich’s room and it looks great so far. She’s almost done and ready to paint. Trivia night is creeping along. We’re still working on table sponsors and teams, but people are showing interest and giving us a positive response.

Thankfully my evening Linux class is going to be pretty easy. I was one of two with a passing score (if they were graded) on the pre-test. Windows Server shouldn’t be too difficult either since I deal with it every day. SQL has me scared since I know very little about databases, but our Prof seems like a guy who will help us get it and help however he can.

Sorry I haven’t been posting anything but Twitter updates, but as you can tell we’ve been busy. I’ll try to get more up here as time allows. Thanks for the emails!

7 Steps to Savings from real world experience

  1. Change to CF (compact fluorescent) lights. Yes, it’s been a really popular subject over the past 2 years, but I am amazed by the number of people who haven’t switched. In our home we only have about 15 bulbs (small house), but we realized about a $20 savings monthly. That’s better than $1/bulb! Of course your mileage will vary according to usage and natural lighting. Even at just $1/bulb, these lights quickly pay for their higher price and begin saving you cash every month. “…But I don’t pay separate electricity…” – Then enjoy the fact that these lights will last much longer than standard bulbs.
  2. Ask your cable company for a discount. I have read about and spoken to many people about calling the cable company and threatening to leave to get cheaper rates. I did that once. Now I call every 6 months to a year and just tell them that my budget only allows $xx for cable/internet. Generally the service representative will take a minute, flip through promotions and come back under what I stated. The most recent go-round, I asked if there was anything to do to replace my online rental service since we don’t have time over the summer to plan out our movie viewing. The Rep came up with a combination of EVERY channel available and internet service for less than $90. That was a $30 savings from the ‘normal’ rate I was on when I called, plus I will also save $20/month by not having the rent-by-mail service.
  3. Wash your clothes on cold. Yes, there are exceptions to this, and every other rule. In general though, our family has not noticed any difference in the cleanliness of our laundry from the switch. No, you don’t need to buy the special cold water formula detergent to make the switch. This will save you by not having to heat water that you will shortly send down the drain with grass stains. Save the energy and let the stains flow down the drain cold.
  4. Close unused rooms and their vents. Common sense, but our electric bill has dropped ~$10/month from closing off our master bedroom, closet, and bath during the daytime hours. Yes, this isn’t a huge saver, but it is a little something to help. During the day (or perhaps night in your case) heating or cooling unused space is a waste of energy that only costs you money, and the power companies are more than happy to charge you for keeping carpet cool.
  5. Turn off lights. This is the second ‘duh’ on my list. Everyone knows to do it and has heard it a hundred times, but do you do it? I find myself constantly following my children and wife around switching off lights. I can’t track this to a specific savings, but our power bill stays under $130/month with me playing nanny to my family.
  6. Put a brick in your toilet. No, not like that. I’m talking about in the tank that holds your water before you flush. If you put a brick (or anything else that won’t float) in the there to take up space, you will save that volume of water every time you flush. Yes, this is a very low-tech solution. If you are a little more advanced you can opt for an adjustable kit that will garner the same result. Personally, our family of 4 saved ~$10 on our water billing monthly.
  7. Wait. Yes, just wait. That shiny new object that you plainly see a use and need for right now, is just another piece of clutter that will take up precious space in your home. At the same time you are plucking from money could be saved and used in other ways. I have learned to wait as long as a year or two before diving into a new technology. By then the price has dropped and technology improved, although I usually discover I just don’t want to buy it any longer.
