Today, I launch Dan’s PC Service

In today’s Mount Vernon Sentinel, my advertisement for a startup PC service business begins running. Granted, it is a soft start, but I don’t want to dive in headfirst and hit concrete.

There are multiple repair/installation shops in town and all are doing well. As a matter of fact, a couple are expanding. In my favor – I have no overhead, I am my own boss, hours are what I make them, I will be much cheaper than any of the other shops currently in operation, I don’t treat people like idiots when they ask PC questions.

Hopefully I will at least be able to help a few clients secure their PC’s and perhaps clean them or help them stay clean of malicious code.

Please pray for my endeavor and hope my phone blows up with phone calls.

Oh, customers@danvoyles.us if you want to refer anyone.

🙂

I’m sorry, you can’t have freedom of the press. It might be inconvenient to the Feds.

Apparently Bush’s administration has problems with all sorts of news/information dissemination (reported on by CNet here). Not only is a vast amount of information missing from their emails and other communication, but there is opposition to a recently proposed law to shield the press in responsible reporting.

The argument I believe they are using is that too much protection is afforded to the press. In REAL national security matters, I agree. There are reasons I could see for the shield to not apply. Fortunately, the constitution framers thought about this when they created this amazing idea of “checks and balances”.

Unfortunately, under the “George-Bush-States-of-America” these systems of balance have been forgotten.  How many signing-statements is W up to these days? How many times has he acted in direct defiance of the very legislation he signs? How well-planned is his withdrawal from Iraq?

Now, I agree that everyone in power gets knocked, and Klinton wasn’t any better with his “Executive Orders”. I just think that W is going waaaaaaaaaaay too far during his presidency.

No luck in Belleville

Oh well. The position I interviewed for on Friday was not offered to me. I just got the “thank you but…” email. I’m not angry, but I am kind of disappointed. It truly was a dream job from my point of view.

Of course, now I’m second-guessing myself and wondering what I said/did to mess it up. Possibly nothing. I’m sure the others interviewed were more experienced than I am. IT/Tech Support wasn’t my forte until the last 2-3 years.  I think I’m a well-rounded support person. Perhaps I wasn’t eloquent enough. Maybe I should’ve worn a suit instead of khakis.

No matter what, I hope they do keep me in mind if anything does open. Like I said, they are about the dreamiest job I’ve heard of in a long time.

At least I will fall back on school this fall if nothing happens this summer.

That’s all folks

Well, Friday was the last day and it was pretty much uneventful. We all came in, the nice HR lady said “Hey, you’re fired” (basically) and that was it.

Of course we were all offered the chance to do an exit interview if we wanted, but only one of the ladies did one. We were done by 9:30. Most everyone filtered out pretty quickly. There was surprisingly little crying. I would guess we were all prepared and ready for the end.

I went to an interview at 1PM in Belleville. I’ll remain vague on details until I get an offer or a “thanks for trying” email, but the company seems freaking awesome. Oh, and the job is something I could fall into easily. It would be tech support, but way less call volume than I’m used to at First Cellular/Alltel. Plus, the company seems fun to work for and has a great atmosphere.

The only drawback I can see is the pay. It is respectable entry-level pay, but the site is an hour from home. So gas and travel time play a big role in this consideration. I would really hate to pass up this opportunity since it is pretty much a dream job for me, but 11 hours (includes lunch hour and travel time) plus gas is a big hit. I SO wish they were based here in Mount Vernon.

Who knows, they may not even offer me the position.

Yikes, Google says I might be a bad person

I just went to Google and did a “vanity search” for my first and last name. I am the first two results, yay. Unfortunately, the next two results are for some guy with the same name in court dockets.

Today, I’m sure that any company doing research on a possible employee does at least a cursory Google search for them. It just makes sense when so much information is online and Google has arguably the most comprehensive search available.

I am actually concerned about these results coming up after a search for my name. What happens when/if a possible employer looks up my name and sees those entries?

Granted, the middle initial of this other Daniel is different from mine, but everyone might not notice that tidbit of information. All they may see is my name on a court docket in Missouri and move on to someone else.

Unfortunately, there isn’t much I can do about the results except hope anyone who may search for me gives some attention to middle initials.
